Big Little People

Evelyn has a lot of fun with her Fisher-Price® Little People® Animal Sounds Farm™. Her favorite animal is the lamb (baa!), but since it can't drive the truck or the tractor she also plays with the actual little people.



In this adventure, Eddie™ and Sonja Lee® are the main characters in the ongoing farm drama. They have already escaped the storage box earthquake only to (repeatedly) fall into the silo. Luckily, Evy is there to scoop them to safety using the trapped door and her massive size advantage.

This past weekend Evelyn got to meet gigantic versions of Eddie™ and Sonja Lee®. They were visiting a local department store as part of a promotional event. We weren't sure how she would react to suddenly becoming the smallest member of this playgroup.

She actually handled it really well. After a minute of study she started trying to play with the big Little People. In fact, before we left she had to give each of them a hug and a kiss. And a big "bye-bye."

She had quite a story to tell her little friends when she got home.

A Tough Week

At her one year check-up last Wednesday, Evelyn was a perfectly healthy 18 pound 3 ounce, 29 inch tall kid. What a difference a week makes.

Evy began her first week as a one year old by starting to cut another bottom tooth. She was a little cranky and was biting everything. We hoped her stuffy nose might also be a part of that, but over the weekend it turned into a cold and then a full fledged double ear infection. A return trip to the pediatrician got her a perscription for an antibiotic. Unfortunately for Evelyn, Amoxicillan leads to nasty diapers which lead to even nastier diaper rash.

To top it all off, tonight Evy had her first trip to the Emergency Room. After her bath a very slippery kid tried to wiggle off her changing table. Her escape was foiled by the decorative top edging of the table when it got in the way of her head. Because of the swelling and proximity to her eye, and after talking to the pediatrician (for the third time this week), we headed out to the hospital.

The ER nurse and doctor were great. They checked out Evy's cut and determined that no glue or stitches were necessary, and they didn't even laugh at us for being paranoid first time parents and bringing her in. At least not in front of us anyway. They said her cut will heal on its own and sent us home with the same 20% off coupon I was given during my ordeal at the same hospital.



As a side note - Evelyn is very happy to show you how old she is now. Just ask her and she shoots up her index finger like a cowboy taking his gun from a holster. If she's excited you might even get both fingers.



Hopefully her second week as a one year old will be better than her first. If not, it's going to be a long year.

Mmm...Cake

Evelyn turned one today!

She celebrated by having her first taste of cake. The "Birthday Princess" was a little hesitant at first...

But after a couple licks of icing, she decided it was tasty and kept on going.

Before we knew it, Evy had devoured the entire top of her cake.

After a half roll of paper towels she was clean enough to get back to presents and playing. And taking some snapshots.

I guess it's only fair, being that we took 163 pictures of her during the birthday weekend.

Year of the Bear

We have taken a picture of Evelyn (with the same teddy bear) on the 12th of each month since she was born. We thought it would be interesting to keep track of how much she would grow and change in her first year.



Since Evy was born on a Sunday, we also took a picture of her every Sunday for the past year. If you want to see those pictures you'll have to come visit...

Updates

Evelyn has been doing some pretty interesting things lately. She can make animal noises, show you where her belly is and eat an entire waffle in no time at all.

She has also decided to remodel the kitchen.

Evy never liked the wallpaper in there, so that came down first. She chose a nice bright shade of yellow for the walls and installed (with some help) a new laminate floor. There is still some work to do - but overall we think she did well for her first try.

We think it is great that she wants to help out around the house. And we still have a couple of months to teach her how to mow the lawn.
